If you can't connect to the Internet

If you can access your emails but not the Internet, your firewall is probably blocking the web browser program (Internet Explorer).

Often a general Internet access connection problem can be sorted by turning off your computer and switching the router off at the mains plug and leaving it for a minute before switching it on. After another 5 minutes switch on the computer and see if you can access the Internet.

If your Internet connection comes from a set-top box (cable provider), you need to turn off the set-top box as well. When switching appliances back on, turn on the set-top box first, leave it to get fully operational, then turn the router on. After five minutes, you can switch on the computer and access the Internet.

Emails blocking your inbox (customers not on broadband)

  1. Go to the website of your provider ie. Tiscali or Orange etc.
  2. Look for a menu item called web mail
  3. This should take you to the login screen
  4. Enter your username and password
  5. This should take you to your email/web mail inbox where you can find any large emails (typically ones with photos as attachments). You will be able to see the size of the emails.
  6. Best to remove these emails and get the sender to compress their photos before they send them to you.
  7. When you go back to get your emails in the normal way they will all start to come in less the large ones which were blocking your inbox before.

The function varies on different makes of printers but the general process is the same.

  1. Click on Start/Control panel in XP (start/settings/control panel in Windows 98)
  2. Open the printer folder
  3. Right click on you printer and select Printing preferences or on some models Settings
  4. Look for a tab or item button saying Maintenance or Toolbox

 Handling emails, files and photographs

 File, photo and email selection

To do anything with files or emails you have to select them first. To select multiple files or emails you can use certain keys to help.

  • To select non concurrent files or emails hold the CTRL key down whilst you hover the mouse over the files you want.
  • To select a block of files in Vista, hover the mouse over the first file in the block to select it (or click on it for XP) then hold the SHIFT key down and select the last file.
  • To select all the files hold the CTRL and A keys down.

Once the files, photos or emails have been selected you can then tell the computer what to do with them, i.e. print or email photos, delete emails etc.

 Camera download

Most modern cameras just need plugging in to the USB port on the computer/laptop. Turn the camera on and select the play mode on (the one you would normally use to view the pictures on the back of the camera) some cameras have a PC mode to select or a button to press on the cradle.

A window will pop up on the screen giving you various options. To install the pictures onto the computer select download photos.

 Sending photos by email

When you send photos by email you should send them via My Pictures.
Select the photos you wish to email as shown above. Then in windows XP there is an instruction on the left (at the top in Vista) to send by email. When you select this you will be asked to compress your pictures. Choose your option and an email will open with your photos attached to an email. Type in the subject box and add any message as required.

 Printing photos

To print photos select them as above and choose the print photo option. This will start up the photo printing wizard allowing you to position the photos on a page and select what type of paper you are using.
